Tim Conway

University of South Florida, USA

Tim is an isotope geochemist and chemical oceanographer. He is currently an Associate Professor at the University of South Florida, receiving his PhD in 2010 from the University of Cambridge & British Antarctic Survey, and carrying out subsequent postdoctoral research at the University of South Carolina and ETH Zürich.

Tim's research group focuses on the oceanic sources and biogeochemical cycling of trace elements and isotopes (TEIs) such as iron, zinc, nickel, and cadmium in the oceans, as part of the GEOTRACES program. The group uses isotope ratios (chemical fingerprints of these metals) to identify whether they have come from natural sources such as submarine volcanoes, marine sediments, and atmospheric dust, or from human pollution such as combustion emissions. They also evaluate internal cycling within the ocean.

The group's main focus is on the South Pacific and Antarctic Oceans, but they also have ongoing interests in TEI cycling in shelf seas in the Arctic and Gulf of Mexico.
