Zhouling Zhang

GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel, Germany

Zhouling's research focuses on understanding the (bio)geochemical cycling of essential elements in estuarine and oceanic systems. She is particularly intrigued by the diverse sources of these elements, including inputs from rivers, sediments, hydrothermal vents, and aeolian processes.

Zhouling completed her PhD at Xiamen University, during which she participated in a Joint-PhD program and spent two years at Lund University. Her doctoral research centered on using silicon stable isotopes to trace nutrient cycling in aquatic systems, laying the foundation for her specialization in non-traditional stable isotope systems.

As a postdoctoral researcher at GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel, Zhouling has expanded her expertise in oceanic tracers, contributing to the GEOTRACES program. Her research now includes barium isotopes, which she uses to investigate marine biogeochemical processes, and radiogenic neodymium isotopes, which she applies to trace water mass provenance and understand boundary exchange processes.
